The New York City Department of Sanitation has issued an agency preparedness snow alert for Tuesday, January 31 at 6 a.m. A snow alert indicates the potential for winter weather, and allows DSNY to begin to prepare for a possible response by loading salt spreaders, attaching plows (if necessary), preparing tire chains and notifying other city agencies and supplementary personnel as needed.
To help residents prepare for the new Carryout Bag law, the New York City Department of Sanitation will give away free reusable bags to passersby near Court and Montague Streets in Brooklyn. Starting February 15, 2017, New York City stores will begin charging customers at least five cents for each plastic, paper, or cloth carryout bag provided. The New York City Council passed this bill last year to reduce the use of carryout bags. Residents not able to attend this Brooklyn event can find additional DSNY bag giveaway events at on.nyc.gov/bag-fee. The map will be updated frequently.
The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is proposing a rule limiting the maximum size of containers that are set out for collection by DSNY. DSNY will hold a public hearing on the proposed rule. The public hearing will take place from 9:30 A.M. from 11:00 A.M. on March 21, 2016. The hearing will be in Room 819 at 125 Worth Street, New York, NY 10013 (DSNY Headquarters).

The New York City Department of Sanitation announced that in observance of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, there will be no garbage, recycling, or organics collection, nor street cleaning on Monday, January 16, 2017. Residents who normally receive Monday trash, organics or recycling collection should place their material out at curbside after 4 p.m. on Monday, January 16 for pickup. The Department usually collects recyclables the week following the holiday, and this is a departure from our normal holiday service.
