- The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), in partnership with the Department of Design and Construction (DDC), has begun work on a $132 million sewer and water infrastructure upgrade in College Point, Queens. A remote operated vehicle was launched to inspect a portion of the Catskill Aqueduct near Rondout Creek in Ulster County. Paul Lenz, who oversees watershed recreation and City-owned watershed properties for the DEP, has been honored as Conservationist of the Year by the New York State Conservation Council (NYSCC).

- The Staten Island Siphon was activated in a ceremony with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Mayor Bill de Blasio, and Staten Island Borough President James Oddo. This new water conduit replaces the original siphons laid across New York Harbor, which will be removed to allow for dredging operations. The DEP has started its annual holiday food drives at both its headquarters and upstate facilities. 750 agency employees were recognized at the 32nd annual employee recognition day at the headquarters of the DC 37 union.

- The New York City Department of Environmental Protection and other city representatives celebrate the installation of green infrastructure in the Gowanus Canal watershed. The first batch of steel liners for the Delaware Aqueduct Bypass Tunnel have arrived in preparation for installation. - The New York City Department of Environmental Protection's recreational boating program enabled 1,668 boats to be taken onto reservoirs, an increase of 14 percent from the previous year. The Marine Operations division was presented with a portal window from the decommissioned M/V Newtown Creek sludge boat, which was sunk off Pompano Beach, Florida. Around 50 educators participated in a watershed tour and learned about water supply, forestry and streams.

- The New York City Department of Environmental Protection has distributed a record 11,111 rain barrels to homeowners, which when applied to outdoor uses can save up to 40 percent of an average household's water use and lower monthly bills. A whale recently spotted in New York Harbor is an indication of improvements to the health of waterways in the region. Mayor Bill de Blasio and the Public Design Commission awarded an annual Award for Excellence in Design to the Waterfront Nature Walk at the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant.

- Energy edition. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has implemented several successful projects to reduce its energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, and is planning new projects such as the installation of a solar array at the Port Richmond Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). - The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has lauched its On-Site Water Reuse Grant Program, which is intended to provide commercial, mixed-use, and multi-family residential property owners with incentives to install water reuse systems. Grants will range from $250,000 to $500,000 dollars; sites with 100,000 or more square feet of space or those which share water between two or more parcels will be eligible. Work has started on a $7.4 million project to refurbish the former Ben Nesin Laboratory building in the Ashokan Complex. 210 people attended a limited access recreation event at Jerome Park Reservoir in the Bronx.

- City, state and local representatives were on site at the Schoharie Reservoir to view a tunneling machine that will begin work soon as part of a $400 million project to construct a modern release works for the reservoir. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has been presented with a special recognition by the Public Design Commission for its thoughtful design of green infrastructure in the watershed to help protect the city's water supply. The DEP is hosting a wetlands exploration event at Ashokan Reservoir on May 26 in celebration of American Wetlands Month. Free rain barrels have been distributed to almost 100 homeowners in the Bronx as part of the agency's rain barrel giveaway program.

- Following upgrades at four wastewater treatment plants at a total investment of $1 billion, the volume of nitrogen being discharged into the Upper East River has been reduced by more than 60 percent. Radar devices are being installed in the Catskill Mountains to measure snow and more accurately predict how runoff will affect the subsequent year's conditions in watershed reservoirs. Under-ice water quality monitoring buoys have been installed for the fourth year running in Ashokan Reservoir. 19 new officers have graduated from the Staff Sgt. Robert H. Dietz DEP Police Academy in Kingston, New York.

- Work has begun on a $34 million project to dredge portions of Flushing Bay, to be followed by enhancements to existing wetlands. Potentially hazardous trees are being removed along a stretch of Route 28 in Shokan in order to protect utility lines and public safety, as well as promote natural growth of the next generation of forests. An additional 2,640 acres of New York City property in Delaware, Greene, and Ulster counties were opened for recreation in 2016. Construction continues on the Gilboa Dam release tunnel, which will bring the dam into compliance with modern safety standards.

- A $22 million project by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is underway to construct 2 of a planned 19 Bluebelt wetlands in the Mid-Island section of Staten Island. The constructed wetlands help detain stormwater after it empties from the surrounding watershed and sewer system, and naturally filters it before it drains into waterways. Officers of the DEP Police underwent an airboat training excercise simulating a search and rescue operation on Pepacton Reservoir. Construction has started on a $20 million sewer upgrade project in a section of St. Albans, Queens, that has lacked adequate stormwater infrastructure.

- As it pursues green infrastructure improvements on city-owned property, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) also encourages private property owners to apply for stormwater management funding. Through the Green Infrastructure Grant Program, all property owners in New York City served by combined sewers are eligible to apply for funding to design and construct stormwater management infrastructure to help improve the health of local waterways. DEP scientists have determined that following last week's blizzard, the snowpack in upstate watersheds measures 93.8 billion gallons of snow water equivalent, more than at any time over the previous winter. Work began on a $6.5 million road rehabilitation project along the west side of Schoharie Reservoir.

- The tunnel boring machine (TBM) that will be used to drive the Delaware Aqueduct Bypass Tunnel has been christened NORA in recognition of Nora Stanton Blatch Deforest Barney, a noted suffragist and the first woman in the United States to earn a civil engineering degree. Nora worked for the New York City Board of Water Supply, a predecessor agency of the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), on the City's Catskill water supply system. The DEP celebrates the opening of a new fleet maintenance garage in Kingston, Ulster County. Construction is underway on a $25 million sewer upgrade project in Rosedale, Queens.

- The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) encourages anglers to take advantage of fishing opportunities on city-owned reservoirs and lakes through the agency's free access permitting system. Resources and events are offered such as brochures, an interactive mapping utility (RecMapper), and family fishing days. One such day will be held at Lake Gleneida on Saturday, April 29. Teams of wastewater treatment workers are training for the DEP Operators Challenge, to be held at the end of April. With the warming weather, the DEP is assisting maple producers to tap maple trees on city-owned lands in upstate watersheds.

- The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is working on a $31 million project to restore and upgrade a historic building on Flushing Avenue in Brooklyn that now serves as a water tunnel and shaft maintenance headquarters. Originally, the building was constructed as a 250-horse stable for the Department of Sanitation. The Catskill Watershed Corporation, which partners with the DEP to maintain water quality and improve watershed communities, is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Around 200 homeowners from communities in southeast Queens received free rain barrels from the DEP and local representatives. - The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has given away its first rain barrels of 2017 to homeowners throughout the city, who can save up to 40 percent of their water use during summer months by using them for lawn and garden tasks. Last year, a total of 11,111 of the barrels were distributed. Since 2013, the DEP has avoided approximately 200 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions through the Demand Response Program. The DEP's only Steam Stationary Engineer, Robert Mastrolembo, is featured in Focus on the Field, which describes his role in maintaining the steam heating system at Wards Island Wastewater Treatment Plant. DEP staff recently participated in the Lower Hudson Valley Professiona Engineering Society's Engineering Expo 2017.

Charmaine Berry of the Bureau of Customer Services has been promoted to Chief Inspector of the Bronx Borough Office, the first woman to hold that role in the bureau. The DEP celebrates 30 years of operation of its Industrial Pretreatment Program (IPP), which has overseen multiple improvements to wastewater management including a reduction in toxic metal discharges into city sewers of more than 99 percent. Five DEP projects have been honored at the annual gala of the ACEC New York Engineering Excellence Awards.

- The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has released its Fiscal Year 2018 Executive Budget. Priorities outlined for the next several years include the completion of shafts for City Tunnel 3, reconstruction of the Catskill Aqueduct from Kensico to Hillview Reservoirs, the completion of the Rondout-West Branch Tunnel repair, and investment into wastewater treatment and sewer projects. A $13.4 million project to upgrade the release works at the New Croton Dam is entering its testing phase. A delegation of environment, forest and climate change experts from India toured the Catskill and Delaware watersheds and met with officials from the DEP as well as the Catskill Watershed Corporation, Watershed Agricultural Council, and the Ashokan Watershed Stream Management Program.

- The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has received its sixth out of a total eleven shipments of steel liners for repairing the Delaware Aqueduct between Newburgh and Wappinger on the Hudson River. Nesting boxes for peregrine falcons on the towers of three NYC bridges are monitored by DEP research scientist Christopher Nadareski, who proceeds to place identifying bands on any new hatchlings. Three DEP teams competed in the Operations Challenge statewide competition held at the New York Water Environment Association's conference in Rochester, New York. Construction has been completed on a $5.5 million sewer installation project in West Brighton, Staten Island.

- July marks the 175th anniversary of the first delivery of water through New York City's Old Croton Aqueduct. The New York City Deparment of Environmental Protection (DEP) will begin a new groundwater drainage feasibility study in southeast Queens. Also in Queens, the DEP's Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations recently completed several drainage and flooding alleviation projects in the neighborhoods of St. Albans, Jamaica, South Jamaica, Laurelton and Rosedale. The New York City Chapter of Trout Unlimited planted nearly 150 native trees along Muscoot Reservoir, which will improve environmental quality and stream bank stability.

- The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) announces the Ashokan Century Program, a comprehensive $750 million project to upgrade infrastructure and facilities at the Ashokan Reservoir in Ulster County. Work will be performed on the main dam and dikes, spillway channel, and dividing weir bridge, as well as the Catskill Aqueduct headworks and chambers and a monument to J. Waldo Smith, the Chief Engineer of the original construction. Work continues on the Delaware Aqueduct Bypass Tunnel, with preparations in place for the start of tunnel boring. DEP joined local elected officials to distribute rainbarrels to around 320 homeowners on the South Shore of Staten Island.

- After 10 years of outreach through the Hydrant Education Action Team (HEAT) program, reports of illegally opened hydrants have fallen by more than 60 percent. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) joined with Council Member Andy King to distribute rain barrels to approximately 100 Bronx homeowners from the Wakefield, Olinville, Edenwald, Eastchester, Williamsbridge, Baychester, and Co-op City neighborhoods. Ground was broken on a project to convert an asphalt schoolyard at JHS 189Q in Flushing, Queens, to a playground with green infrastructure elements.

- Integral pieces of the $30 million tunnel boring machine (TBM) that will be used to repair a leak in the 85-mile-long Delaware Aqueduct have begun to arrive in Newburgh. Earlier this year, the machine was named Nora after trailblazing suffragist and engineer Nora Stanton Blatch Deforest Barney. 135 young people participated in the 2017 Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) summer internship program. Sheep have been deployed to Rondout Reservoir to help maintain the facility's grassy fields after peviously having been stationed at Neversink Dam.

- The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Department of Design and Construction (DDC) have completed the largest ever expansion of the Staten Island Bluebelt, an artificial wetland system which helps manage stormwater and reduce localized flooding. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has accepted DEP's Certification of Completed Construction for the $5 billion Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade. NYC tap water was awarded the top prize at the 2017 Regional Tap Water Taste Contest held at the American Museum of Natural History. Water-saving automatic shut-off timers and activation buttons have been installed on 400 spray showers at City playgrounds.

- The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)'s Bureau of Engineering, Design and Construction (BEDC) is engaged in several large capital projects to improve the city's water supply infrastructure, including the replacement of gates and valves in the New Croton Dam, and a permanent water release tunnel from Schoharie Reservoir around the Gilboa Dam. Gardeners from the Bureau of Water & Sewer Operations (BWSO) have discovered monarch catterpillars and chrysalides for the second year in a row in Queens rain gardens. DEP will be hosting an annual Family Fishing Day on Sunday, September 17 at the Woodstock Dike on Ashokan Reservoir.
