DOT conducted the College Point Transportation Study to address community concerns related to traffic and transportation issues arising from new large scale commercial retail developments on the peninsula. Major recommended improvements include widening Linden Place at the Whitestone Expressway, widening 20th Avenue between Whitestone Expressway and Parsons Boulevard, and creating free flow U-turns between the Whitestone Expressway Service Roads at Linden Place and at College Point Boulevard.

The THRU Streets project aims to make crosstown travel more consistent and reliable for automobile drivers and improve conditions for pedestrians. As a result of the program, travel times on the streets have improved, increasing vehicular capacity and pedestrian safety.
The 34th Street Select Bus Service project seeks to improve traffic, transit speeds, pedestrian safety and curb access on a corridor that extends for two miles from the 34th Street Ferry Terminal on the East River to Twelfth Avenue. The preliminary design of the 34th Street Select Bus Service is based on DOT's analysis of the traffic, transit, and curbside access needs on the corridor.
This report presents the results of a detailed evaluation on the feasibility of implementing a streetcar system in Brooklyn. This detailed analysis considers constructability issues, vehicle options, and overall costs to implement and operate the system. Investigations were performed on areas in the borough and a field visit was conducted on the Philadelphia Trolley system to determine the feasibility of this project.
The Sustainable Streets Index provides data on recent trends in traffic, parking, travel and safety. It also includes a section on "project indicators", an assessment of 11 major DOT projects completed by the end of 2009. The Department of Transportation has completed the first phase of a study of surface transit needs in Downtown Brooklyn. This study has resulted in a number of recommendations for improving surface transit access and mobility throughout Downtown Brooklyn. DOT unveiled the design concept of main road bus lanes for Select Bus Service (SBS) on Woodhaven/Cross Bay Boulevards, a corridor that carries 30,000 daily bus riders over 14 miles from the Rockaways to Woodside. The Woodhaven SBS would be the most intensive and most beneficial SBS route to be implemented and is a vital transportation route for thousands of residents of the Rockaways and central Queens.
DOT tracks long-term trends in New York City cycling using the In-Season Cycling Indicator.The Indicator is derived from counts of bicycle traffic over the four East River Bridges, the Staten Island Ferry, and on the Hudson River Greenway that have been taken annually since 1984. DOT counts cyclists monthly from April to October, with three additional counts in May, August and September for a total of 10 counts per year.

In 1988, the New York State Legislature passed a law to allow cities with a population of one million or more to establish a demonstration program to install traffic-control signal photo violation-monitoring systems (red light cameras), which captures images of vehicles going through red light signals at traffic intersections. New York City used this authorization to launch the nation's first program in 1994. The success of red light cameras in enhancing public safety throughout the five boroughs has led to the City's continued interest in additional expansion. Further increasing the total number of red light cameras the City is allowed to use will make this public safety tool even more effective.
DOT presented a draft proposal for robust safety improvements on Queens Boulevard between Roosevelt Avenue and 73rd Street. The plan includes protected bicycle lanes, increased pedestrian space and specific safety improvements at intersections, with anticipated implementation in August 2015. This project lays the groundwork for a $100 million capital investment on Queens Boulevard, a Vision Zero Priority Corridor, as part of the de Blasio Administration's Great Streets initiative.
