This report summarizes data on drug use among HIV-positive participants in the Medical Monitoring Project (MMP), a study of people living with HIV/AIDS and receiving care in NYC. The study found that 13% of MMP participants used substances in the past 12 months. Among substance users, most were gay (62%) and use was more common among participants who were homeless (20% vs. 11% among those who were not). This report features data from a 2014 retail audit of the East New York neighborhood. Auditors found that for every supermarket in the neighborhood, there were five fast food restaurants and ten bodegas. They assessed the products sold, promotional placement, and advertising in retail establishments, finding that unhealthy snacks were heavily promoted at bodegas and supermarkets and sugary drinks were the most-advertised items.
